BETWEEN THE SEA AND SKY
based on a true story
Imagine a child, looking out at the sea, in a torn dress, on a crowded chaotic street, with all the sights and smells she grew up with, abandoned by her heroin addicted mother, not knowing who to talk too because there is no one; not knowing how to describe what happened to her because there are no words; wondering if this will be here life forever. The sea and sky are still the colors she always loved. The breeze and ocean are still warm and fragrant and the tall palm trees still sway like dancers.
She hears the screaming and laughing of children, the ones she runs the streets with or searches through garbage looking for food or diving into the polluted canals for coins thrown by the tourists. She looks into their eyes and now knows what they know; knows what they were always afraid to tell her.
They are all she has.
How important is her story?
How much is it worth to be able to tell it?
If you saw her and knew you could help her or someone like her, or could be her voice, would you turn away?
